QUESTION: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a sub-committee called T1X1. What does that stand for?

ANSWER: NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and ATIS (Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions) are separate organizations. T1 is part of ATIS, and T1X1 is the part of T1 concerned with synchronization interfaces and hierarchical structures for U.S. telecommunications networks. T1X1 is identified as the "Digital Hierarchy and Synchronization" Technical Subcommittee of T1. Annually NIST, ATIS and T1X1 host the Synchronization in Telecommunications Workshop in the United States. Workshop details are available at www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/seminars/t1x1.html.
